Ljubljana, Slovenia

The capital of Slovenia welcomed us Saturday evening. Our drive from Porto Roz was an exciting one. After having sat in the sun outside for some time, we got in the car and drove past the first mountain range. Upon exiting the tunnel, we had entered a blizzard. No, I am not exaggerating, it was actually a blizzard! Amazing.

Our first impressions of snowy Ljubljana (a name I still cannot pronounce, so I pretend I am a fish underwater each time I say it. This amused Brano at first, but I think he got a little sick of it) were fantastic. The pedestrian center up and down the Ljubljanica River is lined with weeping willows, which were budding at this point, despite the snow. The cobbled walkways of the old town are lined with surprisingly trendy, unique bars, restaurants, and boutiques that would make a gourmet shopper giddy.

We chose wisely for dinner and entered a fantastic beer hall called “Sokol” or Hawk and ate ourselves into the second food stupor of the day. I had venison steaks with current sauce and Brano had a lovely gulas. One thing that can be said for Slovenia is that the food is fantastic. A great mix of Italian, coastal, and Slavic influences that leaves you feeling satiated and fresh.

Our last day in Ljubljana we walked up to the castle and took some splendid pictures of the view, bought some sea salts for bathing and cooking made in the “salt works” just outside of Porto Roz. and walked through the city streets, enjoying the window shopping and character of a nice little town.

An antique market in the center of town.
