Piran and Porto Roz, Slovenia

In the morning the rain still persisted and we checked out of our apartment. Finding a ticket for our parked car, we decided to head over the valley to the Slovenian coast or Istria as its small 40km stretch is known, which is literally a couple of bays away. We took the long route to try to take a picture through the rain…

Miraculously, as we entered the small town of Piran, Slovenia, the weather cleared and we were greeted by glistening Adriatic sea waters. Piran is a small fishing village that is dubbed “the pearl of Istria”. It is frankly adorable, we arrived in the morning and walked through small weaving medieval streets with crumbling architecture. These small walkways with windows adorned with flowers and moisture in the air was reminiscent of our trip only the day before to Venice.

We walked through the winding streets to the church of Saint George all the way up to the top of its bell tower and then on to the old city wall. Then we traversed the old city to the water. Piran doesn’t have beaches, but a cement and stone walkway pleasantly goes right along the sea all the way to the tip of the peninsula. We even saw a rather elderly gentleman swimming.

From Piran we took a short drive down the coast to the neighboring resort town of Porto Roz or “Port of Roses” for lunch. Lunch was all there was to have in this resort town of casinos, beachfront, sport and hotels. It was delicious and we sat outside soaking up the sun, the view of the sea with an Easter Regata underway. That is what vacations are for, sun on your face, breathing fresh sea air and eating a spectacular meal.
